# Europe’s Alternate Tech Future

What if, starting in 1997, Europe had made different choices about culture, capital, talent and scale? This 56-page e-book rewrites thirty years of European tech history, portrays a Europe on equal terms with the US and China in 2027, and runs the numbers on the gap.

## Thirty years, two Europes, in 21 seconds

About the report

## What if Europe had chosen differently?

In 1997, Europe held a strong hand. The Web had been invented at CERN. GSM was the world’s mobile language. Nokia and Ericsson led the handset market, and Linux had just been born in Helsinki. Thirty years later, Europe has no tech company worth a trillion dollars, and the Draghi report says it needs €750–800 billion of extra investment every year just to stay in the race.

None of this was inevitable. **Europe’s Alternate Tech Future** imagines a Europe that fixed what really held it back: a culture that punished failure, pension capital locked out of venture, a single market that existed only on paper, and companies that could start but never scale.

How would Europe look if it had built its own Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, SpaceX, Anduril and Anthropic? Who would have founded, funded and mentored them? And what is the price of the path not taken, in jobs, taxes and living standards? The people and companies in the story are invented. The turning points are real, and so are the lessons for today’s leaders.
